Project Description
My work on behalf of the Wesselman Nature Society began in late 2021, when I was invited to lead a strategic planning process for the organization, which operates two sites in Evansville, Indiana. The scope of work included the following:
- Gathering essential background information about the organization’s resources and markets
- Assessing the implications of that information
- Compiling a “Summary of Findings” report to provide sound background to staff, Board members, and other stakeholders involved in planning
- Leading a strategic planning retreat that established clear and measurable goals and objectives
- Facilitating an implementation planning meeting with staff
In October of 2023, I was invited back to do a study to determine the feasibility of upgrading the organization’s Howell Wetlands site to a staffed nature center (a complement to the center at their Wesselman Woods Preserve). That work included interviews and an online survey, as well as an analysis of existing competition and comparable projects around the country to use as models.
“We had the pleasure of working with David as he guided our staff, board, and volunteers to develop a strategic plan. . . . He was thorough, deliberate in his reasoning, and timely in his delivery. He was very receptive and flexible to contrasting ideas, perspectives, and changing demands throughout the process. Without exerting dominance, he had the ability to express his expertise, perspective, and concerns appropriately to move this project forward. David was a joy to have on our team as we embarked on the next leg of the journey at Wesselman Woods.”
