Helping nature centers succeed in a 21st century world.

Beaver Meadow Audubon Center

North Java, New York • Nov. 2016-January 2017

Project Description

Awarded a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to develop new exhibits, the Buffalo Audubon Society (which operates Beaver Meadow) wanted to identify a theme and sub-themes that would connect with the interests of visitors. My role was to lay the groundwork for other consultants who then developed exhibits and an outdoor nature play area. My scope of work included:

  • A market analysis that incorporated interviews with staff and volunteers, surveys of site visitors and chapter members, and focus groups with both adults and children.
  • Suggested themes and sub-themes that connected visitor interests, site resources, and the nature center’s mission and goals.
“Dave provided expert insight into our audiences and our facility as we looked to develop the first comprehensive exhibit plan for our Beaver Meadow Audubon Center. He challenged our assumptions and the conventional wisdom we had about our interpretive programs, and provided a thorough foundation for meeting the needs of our visitors. Having his expert eyes viewing our problems from an outside perspective was both rewarding and refreshing.”
Loren Smith, Executive Director
